The Fifth Wall: Why Your Ceiling Deserves To Be Part Of The Conversation
I was walking through a client's home in Scottsdale not long ago, gorgeous floors, thoughtfully curated furniture, beautiful drapery, and then I looked up. A flat, builder-grade ceiling. Plain white. Completely untouched.
We spend so much time talking about the four walls of a room. The paint, the wallpaper, the art. But the ceiling? Almost always an afterthought. I think it’s one of the biggest missed opportunities in interior design.
I've started calling it the fifth wall, because that's exactly what it is, a surface with dimension, potential, and presence. When you design it with intention, the room finally feels complete in a way it didn't before.
Here in Arizona, we work with homes that have incredible architectural bones. Lavish kitchens, open-concept living spaces, and primary suites with real volume. So often, all of that ceiling real estate just sits there, ignored. Here are some of my favorite ways to bring it to life, exposed wood beams that add warmth and texture, a wallpaper treatment in a powder room or dining room, or even just a thoughtful paint color that makes everything below it feel more intentional. It doesn't have to be dramatic. Sometimes it's simply about giving it a moment.
One of my favorite projects was a client in Gilbert who had an Office and I decided to go bold to bring the eyes up to the beautiful ceiling details that otherwise would go unnoticed. Adding color to not just the four walls but the ceiling as well encapsulates the room and gives a cozy feel. Everything afterwards then stemmed from the bold color and made all of the accessories and furniture pop out in contrast. When every surface is working together, the room just feels right.
If you're in the middle of a build or renovation anywhere in the Phoenix Valley and your designer hasn't brought up the ceiling yet, bring it up yourself.
The best rooms leave nothing unconsidered. Not even the surface above your head.
