The Showroom Stories: Why I Visit Material Sources in Person

There's something magical about walking into a showroom and running your hands across materials that will become part of someone's home. I know it would be easier to order samples online or flip through catalogs at my desk, but I've always believed that the best design decisions happen when you can see, touch, and understand where materials come from.

When I visit showrooms and material sources in person, I'm not just looking at finishes. I'm learning the story behind them. I'm discovering how a particular stone ages over time, how the grain in that wood catches the light differently depending on the finish, how a plaster develops character as it settles into a space.

These visits give me something I can't get from a screen: confidence. When I'm presenting options to my clients, I can speak from experience. I can tell them how that marble feels cool under your feet on a summer morning, or how that brass hardware will develop a beautiful patina that makes it feel collected rather than new.

It's also about relationships. The people at these showrooms become trusted partners in bringing my clients' visions to life. They know the questions I'll ask, they understand the level of quality I'm looking for, and they often call me when something special comes in that they know would be perfect for a project. Working with brands like Schumacher, Visual Comfort, Cambria… developing these relationships is what helps me know exactly what materials to choose for my clients.

But honestly? The biggest reason I visit in person is because I care deeply about getting it right for my clients. These are investment pieces that will be part of their homes for decades. They deserve more than a quick online order. They deserve the thoughtfulness that comes from seeing materials in person, understanding their origins, and knowing with certainty that they're the perfect choice.

So, I spend time traveling to showrooms. I block out afternoons to touch samples and ask questions. I build relationships with the people who source these beautiful materials. Because at the end of the day, creating timeless, heritage-inspired spaces requires that kind of intentionality.

And when I see my clients' faces light up as their vision comes to life with materials that are even more beautiful than they imagined? Every showroom visit is worth it.
